Have your say on reforms to support children who are not taught in mainstream schools

At the moment around 135,000 children and young people every year spend time being taught outside of the main school system. Some of these children (about 45,000) are taught in Pupil Referral Units (PRUs). Many of these children don’t do as well as students who are being taught in schools.

The government has set out a new plan to support children who are educated outside schools. The plan is called ‘Back on Track’. It wants to come up with ways to help schools support children before their problems get too serious. It also wants to make sure that children who are being educated outside schools get a really good education.

One of the things the government wants to do is change the name of PRUs, as there is lots of evidence to show that ‘Pupil Referral Unit’ is not a popular name.
