CRAE asks Prime Minister to take action

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) has asked the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, to ensure the Government puts the Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice. Carolyne Willow, National co-ordinator at CRAE, said:

“Five years ago the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child set out the actions required by Government to protect children’s rights in our country. After years of neglect, we are looking to the new Prime Minister for strong leadership on children’s rights and social justice. Every Minister that makes policy affecting children should be required to use the Convention and the UN Committee’s recommendations as their framework for action.”
CRAE is pleased that the Children’s Minister, Beverley Hughes, has been given the responsibility for children’s issues across all Government departments.

However, the new Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) must make sure that schools actively use the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This means giving children a say in how their school is run and teaching children about the Convention as part of the national curriculum.
