I care because I believe that it benefits no one at all
Why do I care about naming and shaming?
I care because I believe that it benefits no one at all.
Obviously it can have extremely negative impacts on the life on the young person in question. Once their name is made public they lose their privacy, they may be judged by everyone who knows them. This can then make it harder for the young person to change, to do something good, look for a job, go back to school or volunteer, because they are constantly being reminded of their past and constantly being judged because of it.
The family may also experience negative repercussions of the naming and shaming. They may be made the scapegoat within their community, the family with criminal children, incapable parents. Again, once theses judgements are made it can be very hard to get away from them and get the support that they need to improve the situation.
In my opinion the public do not benefit either. It only reinforces the idea that all young people are criminal, yobs and anti social. Often the reasons why young people commit crimes is obvious, a lack of things to do, problems at home etc. What these named and shamed young people (and the other young people in the area) need is support from their communities.
They need to feel a part of the communities. This cannot happen if any of the young people are known only because they have an ASBO.
